We coordinate with federal, state, and tribal agencies to ensure projects meet all cultural and environmental requirements. Our team manages permitting, reporting, and documentation to safeguard heritage responsibly.
CASE STUDY
Archie Creek Fire Response Project
In 2020, the Archie Creek Fire devastated over 131,000 acres of Roseburg BLM and Umpqua National Forest, destroying vegetation, infrastructure, and cultural sites. Under a Presidential Emergency Declaration, Mountain Engineering partnered with PacifiCorp, the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service, and Native American representatives to restore critical power infrastructure while minimizing cultural impacts.

Cultural Resource Discoveries
Our specialists from Oregon, the Great Basin, and Northern California applied a landscape-based approach, revealing new insights into human history in the region.
Long-term settlement and land use patterns
Early trade networks and regional connections
Diagnostic projectile points dating back over 17,000 years
Some of the oldest archaeological sites recorded in Oregon
Key Artifacts Recovered
Among the most significant discoveries were Western Stemmed Tradition projectile points, rare artifacts that date back over 17,000 years. These finds provide valuable insight into early human activity in the Pacific Northwest, including settlement patterns and tool-making practices.
The recovery of these artifacts highlights the importance of post-fire surveys, where vegetation clearing revealed areas that had been hidden for centuries. Such discoveries contribute to a deeper understanding of cultural history and human adaptation in the region.
